A needle remover acceptability study was conducted at health posts in
Senegal, where needle removers were introduced in two districts in 2003.
After needle removers were used, needles were disposed of in protected
needle pits or special needle barrels. Defanged syringes went into safety
boxes. Safety boxes were used for syringes with needles in comparison sites.
The study found that health workers preferred needle removal over putting
the complete needle-and-syringe into the safety box. They cited improved
safety as the main reason. Another advantage was reduced use of safety
boxes, since 50% more defanged syringes fit into a safety box.
The study also validated the use of the needle barrel in areas where needle
pits are not appropriate or acceptable. The barrel approach provides a good
option in areas where high water table, rocky ground, or lack of open
ground prevent the digging of pits, or where there is the desire to haul
away the old needles once the barrel is full.
Thanks,
Carib
