Post00302 AD SYRINGES FOR VAX RECONSTITUTION 30 November 2000 CONTENTS 1. PROVISION OF A-D RECONSTITUTION SYRINGES: DESIGN & AVAILABILITY ISSES John Lloyd, PATH/CVP writes "One technical issue which emerged from the last Fund review is that the Fund should, in addition to providing AD syringes, also provide reconstitution syringes for freeze dried vaccines at the rate of one per vial of vaccine, including reserve stock (buffer)." " But the review group recommended auto-disable reconstitution syringes which cannot be used for human injections. This would remain consistent with the policy behind the provision of a-d syringes for injections." * "We are urgently seeking sources for these products and will send you what we have found as soon as we can." * Robert Steinglass, BASICS II, suggests that the AD Reconstitution Syringe should incorporate a fixed non-removable needle to prevent needle reuse. * Robert also suggested that these issues be put to the Technet Forum. AD is Auto-Disable, for a one use, self disabling device ___________________________________________________________________________ From: "John Lloyd" To: Cc: Date: 22 November 2000 Subject: Provision of A-D reconstitution syringes by the GAVI Fund One technical issue which emerged from the last Fund review is that the Fund should, in addition to providing AD syringes, also provide reconstitution syringes for freeze dried vaccines at the rate of one per vial of vaccine, including reserve stock (buffer). This means one per two doses of pentavalent vaccine and one per ten doses of yellow fever. The provision of reconstitution syringes by the Fund is generally covered by the current guidelines and therefore there has been no additional recommendation to the board. But the review group recommended auto-disable reconstitution syringes which cannot be used for human injections. This would remain consistent with the policy behind the provision of a-d syringes for injections. The product which is inferred by this recommendation is either: - an A-D syringe of 1ml capacity (for pentavalent vaccine 2-dose) and an A-D syringe of 5ml capacity (for yellow fever vaccine 10-dose) plus a large diameter removable needle for reconstitution or - a disposable syringe (1ml and 5ml) with a fixed large diameter needle for reconstitutiion, which cannot be used for human injection. We are urgently seeking sources for these products and will send you what we have found as soon as we can. All the best, John Lloyd, Resident Adviser PATH-CVP France. --- From: Robert Steinglass Sent: 22 November 2000 To: [[email protected]][email protected][/email] Subject: Re: Provision of A-D reconstitution syringes by the GAVI Fund Why would you want the needle to be removable on the AD option for reconstituting? Also, you and I discussed the disadvantage of having a needle which can otherwise be used for injecting in the 1 ML AD syringe, as the syringe could be used to immunize two kids. I am thinking the non-AD syringe with fixed needle unsuitable for injections is the preferred option. Maybe this is a question for TECHNET opinion, too?? Robert
