POST 00405E : NEEDLE-FREE INJECTOR FOR MASS IMMUNIZATION CAMPAIGN 6 January 2002 ________________________________________________________Darin Lee Zehrung of PATH wishes to share this information on the development of an improved jet injector for mass immunization within the United States. Please read carefully because both the company that developed the product and PATH want the immunization community to discuss the appropriate steps to introduce jet injectors for mass immunization campaigns in the developing world. _________________________________________________________ Felton International, a medical products company in the U.S., recently received clearance (Ref: K013256) from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) under the 510(k) regulation process to market a needle-free jet injector for vaccinations within the United States. This jet injector was adapted from Russian technology by Felton International in collaboration with the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH) in Seattle, whose work is funded by USAID, and the National Nuclear Security Administration's Initiative for Proliferation Prevention (IPP) Program. The re-designed jet injector uses a disposable, single-use protector cap to prevent pathogen transfer between successive patients. The valuable input collected from attendees of the 2001 SIGN/Technet meeting is currently being incorporated into the product design, and will result in ergonomic and packaging improvements for the next generation jet injector (expected to be ready by June 2002). In addition, the next iteration of the protector cap will include an auto-disable (AD) design feature to prevent the potential reuse of protector caps. Using jet injectors for mass immunization in the developing world would likely increase vaccination coverage rates, decrease health workers' valuable time, and eliminate sharps waste. These advantages, along with providing safe injections, could greatly benefit mass immunization campaigns, such as measles, meningitis and yellow fever, in the developing world. Felton International and PATH would like to actively engage the immunization community in a discussion of the appropriate steps to introduce jet injectors for mass immunization campaigns in the developing world. An appropriate field setting and criteria to evaluate the ability of the jet injector to prevent cross contamination in the target population should be determined. It is critical that the international public health community assist our efforts in outlining the steps necessary to achieve this goal. We welcome your comments and thoughts on this issue.
