POST 00441E : IMPACT OF VACCINE VIAL MONITORS (VVM) ON THE USE and DELIVERY OF MEASLES VACCINE Follow-up on Post 00433E 31 March 2002 ________________________________________________________________________________ Post 00433E has generated some questions and comments. First from Femi Oyewole of WHO/Ethiopia ------------------------------------------------ "Thanks for sharing this study proposal with us. Experience with OPV with VVM has shown that changes do occur faster in some tropical areas where ambient temperatures can be as high as over 40 degrees celsius. Can we start looking at the behavior of the "measles VVM" before it becomes generally available? This may help us determine how far we can "stretch" the chain. Or has this been taken into consideration? Another point- how easily does the label come/peel off ?" Femi Oyewole EPI Team Leader, WHO/Ethiopia ------------------------------------------------ Then from Emmanuel Taylor also from WHO ------------------------------------------------ "The study will be quite useful. A change in behavior due to different climatic environment will also be our interest in Kenya as we hope to conduct a nation-wide measles campaign during seven days in mid-June. I am told the measles vaccines may be coming with VVM. Kenya is targeting about 15,000,000 children during the seven-day campaign. Within this period, we will need about 19.5 million doses. We must have in place effective storage and distribution systems. The importance of VVM on the vials becomes evident. So, if they come with vials, we shall give feedback to all on its effectiveness, use and management." ------------------------------------------------- Finally a comment from Mike Levine from the University of Maryland "This is very exciting. These studies make opportunistic use of a unique situation and will likely yield invaluable practical data. Well done to all concerned!!" Myron M. Levine, M.D., D.T.P.H.
