POST 00563E : CONTAMINATION STUDY OF NEEDLE REMOVERS Follow-up on Post 00509E, 00510E, 00512E, 00514E and 00557E 1 May 2003 _______________________________________________________ In POST 00557E, PATH was informing us that the "Comparative Study the Evaluating Surface Contamination of the Test Article" was available (posted on Technet21 website under PATH Documents). Your questions and comments are welcome. _______________________________________________________ PATH developed the protocol in collaboration with WHO, in response to concerns that needle removal poses a potential infection/contamination risk caused by fluid splashing. PATH arranged a qualitative study to measure surface contamination from needle removal. Five devices from four manufacturers were evaluated along with a WHO safety box and removal by pliers. Four of the devices were prototypes that are not in routine production. No devices resulted in any surface splatter except removing needles with pliers.
