POST 00591E : SUGGESTIONS FOR THE MEETING AGENDA Follow-up on Posts 00574E, 00584E and 00587E 10 August 2003 _________________________________________ Here are three more contributions to the agenda of theTechnet21 meeting that will be held this coming November. The first is from Bibata Pare (mailto:[log in to unmask]) from Burkina Faso who also comments on an earlier suggestion by Samson Agbo (Post 00584E). The two others are from Dr. Satish B. Kaipilyawar (mailto:[log in to unmask]) from PATH/India and Pham Ngoc Len (mailto:[log in to unmask]) from UNICEF. ________________________________________ I'd like to inform Mr. S. Agbo that since 1996, some African countries (mainly Sub-Saharan countries) have taken charge of their routine EPI vaccine supply. All these countries have introduced a budget line in their annual budget to cater for the purchase of routine EPI vaccines. Initially, funds for this budget line were secured by the European Union (loan reimbursable later by the country). However, vaccines must always be ordered through UNICEF for quality assurance purposes. If the suggestion was accepted, it would be useful to take the idea a step further in order to find long lasting solutions, that will help maintain the system in all African countries. Sooner or later, that's where we will be heading to. Mrs. PARE Bibata Logistician-Burkina Faso ___________________________ We need to further look at : 1) Non-Burn solutions : possible, operationally feasible, low cost, non-burn safe options for effective disposal of sharps in outreach settings need to be discussed (>70 % of sharps waste is generated in the outreach). 2) Problem of freezing and vaccine out of cold chain in outreach setting (??place VVM and take out of cold chain).VVM policy-time lines for countries to follow. 3) EVSM certification of cold chain stores. These three issues are currently very important and if possible should be considered for inclusion. DR Satish B Kaipilyawar, Hyderabad, India. ____________________________________ I would suggest to have some exchanges of experiences between countries. It can be successful stories or failures. So that we can learn more from each other. In UNICEF we are talking about Immunization Plus. In our country, EPI and Vitamin A distribution are carried out by different institutions so how can these be changed and how can this be practically implemented. This can be a good topic for us. Warm regards.
