POST 00653E : KEROSENE AND BOTTLED GAS FOR PERIPHERAL HEALTH FACILITIES
Follow-up on Post 00641E
16 March 2004

Robert Davis (mailto:[log in to unmask]) from UNICEF/ESARO received
responses to his request from nine TechNet colleagues. He had the wonderful
idea to group them in a document introduced by a brief case-study of
Ethiopia, based on data from the country's recent national cold chain
inventory. He adds the comments below. The document is attached as it
contains tables and figures.
Alejo Bejemino (mailto:[log in to unmask]) from UNICEF/Afghanistan is one
of these nine contributors. Most of his contribution is included in Bob's
document, but he had submitted a spreadsheet that helps calculate fuel
costs. His further comments follow Bob's and the spreadsheet is attached

In a nutshell, nobody likes kerosene. It's messy, it's contaminated, it's
easily diverted, it eats up wicks, lampglasses and burners too quickly, and
it rarely keeps the vaccines within the proper range. Changing over from
kerosene to bottled gas is not a cheap or easy investment, but one which
several countries in Africa and Asia have successfully made, as several
respondents point out.
Best personal regards,
Bob

Just want to share with you the spreadsheet I have prepared for Afghanistan
EPI programme on fuel/oil consumption. I have used this for almost 4 years
without any major problem. Just enter the quantity of equipment and you
will get the total quantities of fuel requirements for the year. Depending
on the cost of kerosene and gas in your location you will get the
comparative cost.
Alejo H. Bejemino
