POST 00751E : CHILD HEALTH DAYS Follow-up on Posts 00740E and 00747E 5 February 2005 __________________________________________ NOTE : The homepage of the TechNet21 website has been edited (http://www.technet21.org). The link to last March meeting has been deleted but access to the pictures gallery will be maintained for a short while still. A search engine has been added. It will surely prove useful to search for example documents on a same topic, more so in longer pages such as the "WHO Documents" page. Indeed documents are classified according to the first letter of the title. In the "Results" page, the words searched appear highlighted with the few preceding and following words, classified by page. By clicking on the link at the top indicating the page where the words were found, it will open that page. By rolling down you will quickly visualize researched words still highlighted. ------------------------------------ This message below comes from Eva Kabwongera (mailto:[email protected]) from UNICEF/Uganda, and gives more details on the Child Health Days. __________________________________________ Dear all, I would like to provide additional information on child health days in Uganda. Child Days or CHD, concept was first discussed and agreed upon in 2001, as a means of reaching children < 5 years with biannual Vitamin A capsule supplementation. The months of May and November were agreed upon. The main delivery points were the routine EPI delivery points both static units and outreaches. The main impetus was on planning for the outreaches and making sure that these outreaches actually take place. In the routine EPI outreaches, the majority of children turning up for vaccination are usually up to 2 years of age. Children older than 2 years are not that many. So the additional effort required during the May and November CHD is to mobilise parents/care takers to take all children up to five years of age to the nearest static or outreach delivery point during the child health days. The main source of funding is from the PHC funds sent to the districts. In 2004, additional resources were mobilized to boost the IEC/Community Social Mobilization, CHD were re-lauched and support supervision carried out. IEC were mainly on promotion of the health and development of a child. Provision of an intergrated package to the well being of children is being promoted. Districts are encouraged to plan and provide as many interventions as possible. The interventions include immunization (all antigens as appropriate), Vitamin A supplementation, deworming, growth monitoring, hygiene promotion and health education. Some districts have organised SOS type of outreach package where curative services of common ailments are offered. ITN retreatment is being considered in May 2005. So CHD are not a campaign. The 2 months have been designated to promote child survival interventions.
