This posting contains links to two interesting presentations on deworming
cross-posted from Technical Updates sent by Bob Davis
(mailto:[email protected]) from UNICEF/ESARO.. The first is : "Deworming
and immunization campaigns" by A. Montresor, D. Engels, H. Allen et L.
Savioli, from Parasitic Diseases and Vector Control of the World Health
Organization, who discuss of the possible association of deworming and
vaccination campaigns. Similar issues can be raised as to other
associations such as bednet distribution, for example about the potential
impact on both parties.
But in the case of deworming should other specific questions also be asked?
Parasitic infestations are transmissible then what is the reinfestation
rate for treated children? The presentation states that periodic treatment
reduces morbidity even in the event of reinfestation. But should the whole
family be treated at the same time, or at least the mother? Would this
reduce the reinfestation rate and thus prolong the interval between
required treatments. Campaigns offer the advantage of reaching a larger age
group but is there a net advantage of treating as many as possible at the
same time? Or would integration be best served by an association with
routine vaccination and general primary health care services? Answers to
these questions are probably well known already. We count on you to let us
all know.
The second presentation is entitled : "Deworming pre-school children" by
unknown authors, maybe the same ones.
You can download them from our site. They are relatively heavy :
