POST 00993E : REFRIGERANT GASES 17 October 2006 ___________________________________________ The message below comes from Anthony Battersby (mailto:[email protected]) from the United Kingdom. It is likely that very few of you are experts in refrigerant gases. I looked for more information, most of it emanating from the industry. The only general information I found is an article from Wikipedia, for what it is worth, on refrigerants which provides some interesting information. You can look at it at : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refrigerant At least you will learn where the R-# numbering comes from. There is also a long list of refrigerants in the same encyclopedia, not all linking to a detailed article on the compound, despite a link. You can access this list at : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_refrigerants and explore further from there! ___________________________________________ I draw your attention to the following reported in New Scientist this week (30 September). "Mount Zeppelin on the arctic island of Ny-Alesund, part of Norway .. Now recording an alarming surge in HFC134a. ... The concentrations of the gas above Mount Zeppelin doubled between 2001 and 2004." HFC134a is 1000 times more efficient as a greenhouse than CO2. I think Technet as a matter of urgency must discuss changing from 134a to another refrigerant, maybe Isobutane which is neither ozone depleting nor a greenhouse gas. May I put in a plea that we allocate some time for discussing what to do or agree to convene a separate meeting, as we did when we switched from R12 to R134a, to revisit the issue of which gas should be used in refrigeration.
