POST 01001E : TECHNET MEETING 26 October 2006 ___________________________________________ Technet21 held today its first day of its consultation meeting entirely devoted to the first session on Vaccine Management. We cannot share with you the whole session but a few elements. Topic 1.1. : Vaccine Freezing Avoidance A lot of discussion were again devoted to vaccine freezing. One of the many significant sentences heard during this session was : "If you think that vaccine freezing is not a problem in your country, you are mistaken!" So to help solve the problem, a first step is to document it. PATH and UNICEF developed a user-friendly protocol for Latin America to investigate the issue. The protocol can obviously be used in any country. If you are interested in studying and/or using this protocol, you can download it from : http://www.twchnwt21.org/pdf_file/PATH_UNICEFOriginalVaccinesFreezing_study_protocolforLatinAmerica_English.pdf (1.5MB before encoding) We also share the interesting report of a workshop on cold chain management held in Panama City in May-June 2006 that gives further insight on all cold chain issues. You can download the report from : http://www.technet21.org/pdf_file/UNICEF_PATHRegionalLatinAmericaColdChainWorkshopReport_2006.pdf Finally, Steve Wiersma presented the draft of a WHO Aide-memoire "Preventing Freeze Damage to Vaccines. This document is hosted on the site in the "Draft documents for comment" page. ( http://www.technet21.org/pdf_file/WHO_FreezeFlyer_draft.pdf ). You are invited to read it and transmit your comments whether to Suleymane Koné (mailto:kones@who.int) or Diana Chang-Blanc (mailto:ChangBlancD@who.int). But please copy Steve Wiersma (mailto:swiersma@cdc.gov). --------------------------- Topic 1.2. : Vaccines out of the cold chain Have you read the document "Temperature sensitivity of vaccines" sent to you in Post 00984E on October 4? In any case, we propose you a little exercise. Open Julie Milstien's presentation from : http://www.technet21.org/Mexico/J.Milstien_VaccineTempSensitivity_4Oct06.ppt Do not look at the slides on the left but set your software on viewing the slideshow. On slide three, you will see the list of vaccines that you will have to plot in one spot on the graph according to their degree of sensitivity both to heat and freezing. Write down the list. Then move to the next slide (slide 4). On a piece of paper, draw this blank graph roughly and try to plot all of the ten vaccines. Once you have plotted them all, view the rest of the slideshow. You will see where all of the ten vaccines go, and check for how many you were correct. Don't cheat! --------------------------- Topic 1.3. : EVSM primary store assessment You can download Suleymane Kone's presentation on progress of the EVSM initiative as of June 2006 from : http://www.technet21.org/Mexico/S.Kone_GlobalSummaryEVSM_25Oct06.ppt The meeting concluded that the process needs acceleration and greater involvement in Latin America where only one country has made an EVSM assessment so far. ______________________________________________________________________________ All members of the TechNet21 e-Forum are invited to send comments on any posting or to use the forum to raise a new discussion or request technical information in relation to immunization services.
