POST 01063E : REFRIGERATOR/FREEZERS PURCHASE AND OPERATING COSTS 9 March 2007 ____________________________________ The first two contributions were circulated among UNICEF staff by Bob Davis (mailto:[email protected]) from UNICEF/ESARO who has sent to TechNet21 for further circulation. The table attached is a comparison of two refrigerators and is accompanied by the author's comments, Emmanuel Taylor (mailto:[email protected]) from UNICEF/Ethiopia. The second contribution, a comparison of a number of refrigerating equipment comes from Serge Ganivet (mailto:[email protected]) from WHO/Zimbabwe. Finally, Gregory Kiluva (mailto:[email protected]) from UNICEF/Supply Division, has sent his comments. ____________________________________ The table attached is a comparison of two types of equipment but from two different manufacturers : From this table conclusions can be highlighted with these figures 1. purchase cost / unit volume or cost / per service Vestfrost 360/192 = 1.9 $/service of vol Electrolux 1170/264 = 4.5 $/service of vol 2. maintenance cost / unit volume or cost / per service Vestfrost 160/192 = 0.8 $/service of vol Electrolux x320/264 = 1.2 $/service of vol Surely one spends more with Electrolux than with Vestfrost, for about the same amount of service. Vestfrost consumes less electricity for the same 24hr service. I thought I had complaints from participants from South America at the Technet meeting that ILR were freezing vaccines. Did I hear that? Regards Emmanuel ------------------- 1/ Health center: - Vestfrost MK 074, Storage capacity 20 L for vaccine, freezer compartment for 8-15 ice packs, USD 520.00 - Vestfrost MK 144, Storage capacity 45 L for vaccine, no freezer compartment, USD 400.00 - Electrolux TCW 1990, Storage capacity 40 L for vaccine, freezer compartment for 15-30 ice packs, USD 1,200.00 2/ Central store. You need approximatly 200-250 L per year for all vaccines or 100-150 L for 6 months supply (total population is roughly 90.000 inhabitants) - Vestfrost MK 204, storage capacity 65L for vaccine, no freezer compartment, USD 480.00 - Vestfrost MK 304, storage capacity 110L for vaccine, no freezer compartment, USD 550.00 - Vestfrost MF 114, vaccine/ice packs freezer (no refrigerator) of a storage capacity of 72 L, USD 300.00 - Vestfrost MF 214, vaccine/ice packs freezer (no refrigerator) of a storage capacity of 192 L, USD 350.00 - Vestfrost MF 314, vaccine/ice packs freezer (no refrigerator) of a storage capacity of 264 L, USD 400.00 - Electrolux TFW 800, ice pack freezer specifically (not for vaccine) for up to 200 ice packs, USD 1,600.00 (but I think that a domestic freezer can be used also for only freezing ice packs if temperature can be below -15 degree C) The prices are given as indicative. I suggest to have 2-3 equipments of smaller capacity than only one of a big capacity, the maintenance is easier. Thanks serge --------------------------- Dear Davis, My suggestion is that if a comparison is to be made, we should use equipment with similar vaccine storage capacity. MF 314 and FCW 300 have identical vaccine storage capacity of 264 lts. Their costs are 590 and 1242 USD respectively. In making the comparison, it will be important to note the issue of reliability of the specific equipment, with regards to additional accessories that are prerequisite for optimum operation of the equipment etc. Note that, for all Vestfrost compression products, a stabilizer is recommended where there is intermittent power. Use of the stabilizers will also depend on the commitment of the health worker charged with this responsibility. In countries where generators are solely the source of power and where they have to be swopped every 12 hour translates to intermittent power. The Dometic product goes as low as 179V for the 230V and a stabilizer is not a requirement. Failure rate increases with the more accessories. There are other factors that are not quantifiable such as missed opportunity due to failure rate of equipment, loss of potency due high failure rate without alternative storage etc. Regards, Gregory W Kiluva Technical Officer Cold Chain and Waste Management UNICEF Supply Division ______________________________________________________________________________ All members of the TechNet21 e-Forum are invited to send comments on any posting or to use the forum to raise a new discussion or request technical information in relation to immunization services.
