POST 01219: SCHOOL-BASED TT VACCINATION 25 JANUARY 2008 Follow-up on posts: 01217E , 01214E , 01212E ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Imp: Please do not send your contributions to [[email protected]][email protected][/email], for your emails will not reach the TechNet moderator. WHO strongly supports school-based immunization, especially where school attendance is high, as a delivery strategy to reach children with booster doses. In this context, readers may want to take a look at the WHO position paper on Tetanus, which outlines a schedule for tetanus vaccine that aims at providing protection in all ages. It is WHO's position that it is preferable to spread out booster doses over time, rather than provide these in rather short succession in early school years, to ensure more prolonged protection. The WHO position paper outlines as schedule: 3 DTP doses in infancy, followed by a TT-containing dose around school-entry age (4–7 years), a dose in early adolescence (12–15 years), and a final booster in early adulthood (e.g. in pregnancy or (for men) during military service). It is the dose at school-entry age where school-based delivery may be a good option. In countries where school attendance in early secondary school remains high, the same approach can also be used for the dose at age 12–15. Thanks and Best Regards, Jos Vandelaer, Jos All members of the TechNet21 e-Forum are invited to send comments on any posting or to use the forum to raise a new discussion or request technical information in relation to immunization services.
