POST 01288E: TECHNOLOGY IS MORE THAN EQUIPMENT 8 JULY 2008 FOLLOW-UP ON POST 01286E ******************************************* In response to Dr Rajesh Sood. In Jharkand, a state in northern India, 100+ solar refrigerators were installed about 3 to 4 years ago. The US-imported refrigerators were of excellent quality but had to be switched manually from solar to grid electric mode. An internationally reputed Indian supplier supplied the solar panels, which were of excellent quality. The balance parts were supplied and installed by a local entrepreneur, who did not have a clue as to the component requirements, installation standards or anything else. The net result was that 12 months after installation, NONE of the 100+ units were working. Estimated cost USD 500,000. Efforts to intervene and correct the technical shortcomings for approx 10% of the investment costs were not considered by the financing organizations. There is perhaps a moral to this story. Yes solar, preferably solar hybrid since it is more cost effective in many situations than solar by itself, but let’s make sure that the technology package is correct, installation standards are first-class, maintenance skills are at hand and ALL the players from the financiers to the maintenance technicians are motivated to want to make such experiences successful. Tech 07: Portable, Inexpensive, Vapor-Compression Refrigeration for Emerging Countries The necessity of the ARCTIC system is in its energy savings and consequently its ability to possibly save lives. Many emerging nations have little ability to provide proper electricity and thus efficient refrigeration. The primary objective of the ARCTIC system is to enable low cost, high efficiency, solar powered vapor compression refrigeration systems ... ARCTIC’s small size relieves space to be used for refrigeration rather than compressor space. ... It is estimated the system could be developed at a cost of less than $65. ... 3.
