POST 01339E: POLIO—ERADICATION VS CONTROL FOLLOW-UP ON POST 01338E 22 OCTOBER 2008 ****************************************** Given the content of the World Health Report, which incidentally does not mention polio, why is WHO still trying unsuccessfully to eradicate the disease? It is the most expensive vertical programme ever. Wouldn't now be the time to accept that it makes better sense to live with control of the disease, which has in global terms, been achieved some years ago and focus the billions on interventions that will bring greater benefit? Anthony Battersby ([[email protected]][email protected][/email]) FBA Health Systems Analysts -------- 24 October is World Polio Day. It has been a long journey since Jonas Salk produced the polio vaccine, followed by Albert Sabin’s oral vaccine. Considerable success has been achieved in reducing polio incidence, though pockets of infection continue in countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nigeria. So are the high investments in polio eradication warranted? The eradication vs. control debate continues.
