POST 01369E: NEW VACCINE INTRODUCTION—ROTAVIRUS 5 JANUARY 2009 ****************************************** Rotavirus is the leading cause of severe diarrhoea in young children worldwide and accounts for approximately 40 percent of diarrhoea-related hospitalizations. Use of rotavirus vaccines globally can have a substantial impact in reducing hospitalizations and the estimated >500,000 annual deaths from the disease, thereby contributing to the achievement of the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals for reduction of childhood mortality. The vaccines have been introduced in the Americas and Europe, where vaccine efficacy has been demonstrated and the necessary training and financial support exist. Share your comments ([[email protected]][email protected][/email]) on, and experiences in, introducing the rotavirus vaccine into the immunization programme. -------- Resources: 1.
