Vaccine vial size – the total number of doses a single vaccine vial contains – can have a significant impact on vaccine distribution, costs, and use, according to a paper recently published in the journalVaccine.

In the study titled “One Size Does Not Fit All: The Impact of Primary Vaccine Container Size on Vaccine Distribution and Delivery,” researchers at the International Vaccine Access Center (IVAC) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC), in collaboration with the LOGIVAC project with the Agence de Médecine Préventive (AMP), used the simulation modeling platformHERMESto estimate the impact of various vaccine vial sizes on the vaccine supply chain, including vaccine availability and costs. HERMES is a software platform created by the HERMES Logistics Modeling Team that allows users to generate a detailed discrete event simulation model of any health supply chain. This simulation model can serve as a “virtual laboratory” for decision makers to address a variety of questions.
