Hi, I would greatly appreciate your expert opinion on a technical question regarding extensive field monitoring of solar generator. The objective is to carry out a long-term, rather in-depth field monitoring of solar (DD) fridge installations for their long-term performance evaluation and programmatic learning about their operations- hence only a subset of all solar units would be monitored. To monitor and evaluate a solar generator, the basic set up should probably track the solar exposure at the panel site with a pyranometer and the electrical output of the solar generator (should it be best voltage? intensity? power? a combination? is there a specific location where it should be measured?). Any related protocol or recommendation for specific data logger brand or toolkit is welcome. Secondly, I am also wondering whether there are any other valuable elements to monitor, either as performance indicators of the solar generator or as key environmental factors that could impact the solar generator performance. For example, I wonder whether it is valuable to monitor the ambient temperature of the solar panel , or the temperature of the panel itself. I anticipate those complementary measurements might only be insightful in case of unexpected performance or issue as it might help identify the causes of the unexpected situation. Looking forward to your thoughts, Yann

It would be helpful if you monitored ambient temperatures which would give an indication of energy consumption. With a direct drive system it would be most valuable to have hourly data for, isolation and power generated by the PV. For most direct drive systems with no battery the power output of the PV will equal the power consumed by the refrigerator. To calculate power you would need measurements of amps and volts.

Hello, I am sure that Steve McCarney could provide very detailed advice on this ([email protected]) a few personal comments though: Certainly getting more information on the performance of the solar Direct Drive refrigerators in the field will be highly valuable as these are very new devices and we have little experience with them. However you should really define precisely the purpose and expected outcome of the monitoring programme you are putting in place and how you will use the data that you generate. 1) why do you want to monitor the performance of the solar generator? There are lots of data on the performance of the solar modules that manufacturers can supply : insolation/ Voltage/current curves at various temperatures (Temperature does influence the performance of the PVC modules) so what do you expect to find trough this monitoring ? and how long will the monitoring go on? Insolation data can probably be found from the world meteorological organization or the national meteorological entities. I am not sure what value added you would get from collecting this information from a limited number of sites and correlating it to fridge performance (again Steve McCarney who has the expertise may have a different opinion) 2) The monitoring of the fridge performance itself is a different thing and you may wish to consider a remote temperature monitoring device such as the "Beyond Wireless" device which Optimize has been using in Senegal (Modibo Dicko Can provide details : [email protected]) or similar devices and Sophie Newland would certainly be able to share a list of such devices ([email protected]) regards Michel

Hi Yann, We've been doing quite a lot of field monitoring of our Solar Direct Drive refrigerators that use Sure Chill technology. You have a lot of choices about what parameters you measure and how you communicate with the datalogger. All features come at a cost and so you probably need to decide how much you've got to spend and then decide how best to spend it. It's rather a lengthy subject and there are some new entrants to the market that make things interesting so suggest if you want to drop me a line or better still let's have a Skype call ian.tansleybls and we can have a chat about what you're trying to achieve and the best wasy to do this Best regards, Ian
