Dear Friends, A Modeling Study concludes that new vaccines could substantially reduce TB incidence and mortality. Similarily, I strongly feel that the recent 31% success with the new HIV vaccine could have been further enhanced if given in conjunction with ART. Please see the link below: http://www.pnas.org/content/106/33/13980.full Study published in PNAS concludes that effective TB vaccines used appropriately could save 14 million lives by 2050. The modeling study results based on TB rates in the South-East Asia region and published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences concluded that the new TB vaccines - especially in conjunction with new drugs and diagnostics - could lead to a "substantial reduction" in TB rates and mortality compared with current approaches. Elizabeth Halloran and colleagues concluded that a new TB vaccine with 60 percent efficacy could reduce TB incidence by 39 to 52 percent if only given to infants or by 80 percent if given to people of all ages by 2050. In the model, combining new infant vaccines, drugs and diagnostics reduced TB incidence by 71 percent.
