During a routine visit to the facilities and on analysing the vaccination data, a gap in operational aspects was observed as vaccination within 28 to 30 days from date of birth qualifies as newborn vaccination for BCG; administering 2 drops of OPV within 15 days qualifies as zero OPV for operational purposes; and administering 0.5 ml of HepB within 24 hrs intramuscularly at anterolateral aspect of mid-thigh qualifies as birth-dose. But, in reality, data analysis revealed a range from 0 to 73 days reported as birth-dose of HepB; similarly more than 15 days for zero OPV; and more than 30 days for BCG. Hence a one-pager protocol has been developed for operational uniformity. Newborn vaccination inducts the child at the earliest opportunity and is expected to minimize left-outs. A few more delicate issues were also addressed like vaccinating the baby in the presence of the care-givers; that the baby is awake, etc. I am submitting this protocol to the viewers for valuable inputs.
