POST 00587E : SUGGESTIONS FOR THE MEETING AGENDA Follow-up on Posts 00574E and 00584E 27 July 2003 _________________________________________ We continue to post suggestions for the agenda of the Technet21 meeting with three more contributions. The first is from John Pott (mailto:[log in to unmask]) followed by that of Robert Steinglass (mailto:[log in to unmask]) from the BASICS Project. The third one is from Samuel Kamau (mailto:[log in to unmask]) from Kenya. __________________________________________ Over recent years the TECHNET meeting has tended to drift away from the key issues encompassed in the ideals of EPI and it is reassuring to see that the preliminary agenda is again concentrating on some of the key issues. I would suggest that in addition to "Overcoming freezing in the cold chain" another area that needs to be re-evaluated is vaccine distribution systems in general. The declaration of "Polio-free Western Pacific Region" and the publicity surrounding this event caused a serious decline in immunization coverage in some countries and more importantly a decline in technical assistance funds. Therefore, the question of immunization financing takes on a new importance with the general perception that polio is eliminated and the other EPI diseases are well under control, leaving EPI financing taking second or third place to HIV, TB and Malaria. John Pott __________________________________ In keeping with the interest in broadening Technet beyond just technological solutions, I am listing a few additional programmatic areas to consider for the agenda. I think your list of possible agenda items is a good start. I realize there are limits on how many topics to include. These are listed to stimulate reactions: - linking communities to raise coverage and reduce dropout: how to do it and with what evidence [after all, this is one of the 5 operational elements of "Reaching Every District" and one where WHO and participants may need information on what is being tried and with what results] - improved monitoring AT peripheral levels to achieve results ["at" not just "of"][again one of the operational elements of R.E.D.] - new developments in strengthening vaccine logistics - housekeeping: how to interface TECHNET Forum and TECHNET into existing mechanisms and processes (e.g. GAVI, RWGs, etc.) - results of first 6 (?) months of use of the Vaccine Arrival Report: identified problems, solutions, compliance - joining program communications and monitoring [exposing participants to the new approach being designed to add monitoring to communications - see results of mid-June meeting in South Africa] - strengthening ICC functioning [but this may be too political and divisive to include in an open forum. Thanks for stimulating us to add possible topics for consideration. Obviously, there cannot be too many agenda items, but the process of soliciting ideas may itself increase engagement and result in an agenda suited to the perceived needs "out there". Sincerely, Robert ___________________________________ I would suggest we have a session on where are we on injection safety and another session on waste management, particularly on the use of safety boxes and countries experiences on Montfort incinerators.
