PATH is presently preparing a full document that will be circulated later. _____________________________________ Vietnam has conducted a pilot project using out of cold chain delivery of the birth dose of hepatitis B vaccine. PATH and the Vietnamese national EPI collaborated to evaluate the feasibility of the out of cold chain approach to improve coverage among infants born in health facilities without access to the cold chain. Results demonstrated that the out of cold chain approach is effective in reaching children born in rural areas. With the out of cold chain approach, children received the birth dose at the same rate as those born in hospitals. Overall, on-time birth dose coverage doubled. Immunogenicity improved. The strategy was highly acceptable, effective, and feasible. Vietnam is now moving forward to develop national guidelines to expand the program nationwide.
