POST 00509E : CONTAMINATION STUDY OF NEEDLE REMOVERS
10 October 2002
_____________________________________________________
Janet Vail (mailto:[log in to unmask]) informs us of a splatter contamination
study of needle removers conducted by PATH. The report is not yet available
but more information will be provided, as well as device demonstrations and
consultations to be held during the upcoming SIGN annual meeting in
Cambodia later this month.
_____________________________________________________
Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH) recently completed a
splatter contamination study of various needle removers. Needle removers
are devices that separate the needle from used syringes either by cutting
the needle, cutting the syringe, or pulling the needle from the syringe.
The test, funded by PATH, was conducted by NAMSA, a multinational company
based in the U.S. specializing in nonclinical testing services to ensure
medical device safety and compliance. The protocol of the study was
developed by NAMSA in consultation with PATH and WHO.
The test included 1 needle remover that is currently available, and 4
prototype devices from 3 developers. In addition, we asked NAMSA to test
the practice of pulling the needle from the syringe manually using pliers.
Finally, we tested for any contamination if the needle is not separated
from the syringe and placed in a standard sharps disposal box. The only
surface splatter that resulted was when pliers were used to pull the needle
from the syringe. The report will be made available on TechNet.
We are working with all manufacturers and developers to optimize their
products so that they will be appropriate for developing country use. We
will be presenting more information about the study at the SIGN annual
meeting (26 October at 16:50). This meeting will be held in Phnom Penh,
Cambodia from 24 to 26 October 2002. More information on the meeting can be
found on the SIGN website at the following URL :
http://www.injectionsafety.org/.
In addition, we will be convening a hands-on session on Friday, October
25th in the evening (18:30 -19:30) to explore advantages and trade-offs for
designs of needle-removers. The session will be held in the ASEAN WOK VIP
Room, Hotel Cambodiana. We will have several devices on hand for
demonstration, and will be soliciting your feedback about the specific
designs. We hope to see you there!
