POST 01087E : CHILD HEALTH DAYS 2 May 2007
____________________________________
In an earlier Child Survival Update, Robert Davis
(mailto:[email protected]) wrote : "Recent thinking on disparity
reduction has centered around ways of removing systems barriers to
access for high impact child survival interventions. One idea which
has caught on in recent years is the use of Child Health Days,
typically done twice a year to provide a basket of basic services,
often including vitamin A, deworming, TT, and child vaccination".
The topic had been discussed before on TechNet, in 2005, in the
series of postings starting with Post 00740E : Uganda Child Health
Days, and Post 00791E : Other interventions with vaccination.
The attached document provides direct links to the whole series of
postings on these topics.
Bob sent an interesting presentation, "Results from the Child Health
Days Assessments" presented at the Global Immunization Meeting in New
York, by Nita Dalmiya, from UNICEF HQ. This presentation can be
downloaded from :

(2.1 MB)
Some of her main findings are :
* Routinely used by many countries esp. in Africa to achieve &
sustain high coverage of select child survival interventions.
* In Ethiopia, Tanzania & Uganda, CHDs effectively deliver
multiple interventions (vit. A, de-worming, immunization).
* In Ethiopia & Uganda, CHDs add value to routine immunization services.
In the same Update, Bob also wrote : "From WHO/AFRO come the results
of the first AFRO Regional attempt to document experiences and best
practices in conducting integrated interventions". It is the
following "Documentation of experiences in integrating child survival
interventions in the African Region", available from the list of WHO
documents on the TechNet site, or this direct link :
