POST 01119E : SOLAR REFRIGERATOR Follow-up on Posts 01019E, 01027E, 01032E, 01037E, 01045E, 01095E, 01102E and 01109E 10 July 2007 _____________________________________ This posting contains one contribution from [log in to unmask]">Robert [log in to unmask]">Steinglass from IMMUNIZATIONbasics, adding one other consideration in selecting (solar) refrigerator models _____________________________________ One key consideration of importance to consider is how much ice-making and ice-storing capacity is required (along with vaccine storage capacity) to provide outreach teams with sufficient ice for their vaccine carriers. In India, several ANMs (auxiliary nurse midwives) operate out of the same health facility and visit nearby villages on a regular outreach schedule - - usually on the very same day to facilitate easier community mobilization (e.g., on Wednesdays). This requires quite a lot of icepacks. (Alternatively, in some places, vaccine and ice are being supplied directly to the visited villages from a different health facility at higher levels that has more assured electricity-powered and ice-making capacity.) So, field staff must factor in the amount of ice needed to power outreach teams. Robert Robert Steinglass Technical Director IMMUNIZATIONbasics JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc.
